Snohomish County Public Works and Granite Construction Recognized for Outstanding Paving Project
Joint effort results in award for “best county paving project in the state”
EVERETT, Wash., Nov. 23, 2015 – On the heels of completing work on its annual Paving Program, Snohomish County and Granite Construction were awarded the 2015 Best County Paving Award – Western Washington. The recognition highlights the proficient work completed for the county’s 164th Street SW/SE from 14th Place W to SR 527 project. The award was presented and sponsored by the Washington Asphalt Pavement Association (WAPA) and the Washington Association of County Engineers (WSACE).
Snohomish County planned the project in partnership with the City of Mill Creek and selected Granite Construction to pave approximately two miles along 164th Street SW/SE between 14th Place W to State Route 527 in Mill Creek. Prior to construction, the pavement was cracked and uneven, and could no longer support the heavy volumes of traffic along the arterial. The challenge for this project was during construction crews were tasked with managing the high traffic volumes while delivering high quality paving that will last for years.
To make the roadway safer for commuters, Granite Construction grounded down the top layer of asphalt, repaved, and re-striped the corridor. Additionally, the project included upgrades to 80 sidewalk ramps at 13 intersections to meet revised Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
“With Granite Construction’s paving expertise, the county was able to reduce potential costly maintenance repairs to the corridor and support growing traffic volumes well into the future,” said Bobann Fogard, Snohomish County Public Works Transportation and Environmental Services Director. “The Paving Program along with its sister program, the Chip Seal Program, have been on the county’s annual project list for more than two decades. It’s through these programs and the work of contractors including Granite Construction that the county is able to maintain and improve the roads while preserving the county’s roadways and investments.”
