Snohomish County Community Heritage Preservation Grant Program
Now Accepting Applications for 2018
Everett, Wash., Dec 1, 2017 – Snohomish County’s Community Heritage Grant Program is currently accepting grant applications from public and nonprofit agencies for 2018. The County has more than doubled the amount of grant funds available in the program from $75,000 in 2017 to $200,000 in 2018. It is hoped the increased funding will help to preserve even more of Snohomish County’s history and culture. The due date for applications is January 30, 2018.
Changes in 2018 include a large grant that will be available for funding of projects up to $100,000. Additionally projects that enhance the availability of significant historic information and data may not be required to have a financial or in-kind labor match. Eliminating the requirement for a match should help smaller museums and nonprofits complete the important work of digitization of newspapers, the development of historical texts, improve the accessibility to historical documents through websites, and help with the purchase of software and the creation of educational programs. The large grant program will create an opportunity to provide additional financial resources to projects with a high cost such as repairs to historical structures.
The funding of the program comes from recording fees collected by the Snohomish County Auditor. The allocation of these funds is for projects that “promote historical preservation or historical programs, which may include preservation of historic documents,” authorized under RCW 36.22.170.
In 2017 the grant program supported 13 projects. These projects helped to preserve the Edmonds Museum, install restrooms in the Startup Events Center, and replace windows on Stanwood’s Pearson House. The grants provided funding to digitize newspapers to aid research efforts, support development of historical exhibits to promote tourism, and funded the development of historical books to educate about our past.
The Commission invites the public to a review of the 2017 projects at a public meeting at 7:00 p.m. on December 19, 2017 on the 6th floor of the Robert Drewel Building at 3000 Rockefeller Ave in Everett.
