Snohomish County Solid Waste Division Named 2016 Leader in Sustainability
Call2Recycle Recognizes County Performance of Recycling more than 100,000 Pounds of Batteries
EVERETT, Wash., May 1, 2017 – One of the nation’s premier battery recycling programs, Call2Recycle, has selected Snohomish County’s Solid Waste Division as a recipient of its 2016 Leader in Sustainability Award. The award recognizes the 100 top preforming Call2Recycle collection sites in their commitment to environmental preservation through battery recycling.
“Sustainability is a priority for Snohomish County,” said Steve Thomsen, Director of Snohomish County’s Department of Public Works. “This is just one example of how our partnerships with various organizations enables us to help protect Snohomish County’s natural resources.”
Snohomish County celebrated its 16th consecutive year of partnering with the Call2Recycle program in 2016. In 2015 and 2016, the county diverted 127,404 pounds of batteries from landfills to the Call2Recycle program. Collected batteries managed by the Call2Recycle program are often recycled into new products, such as silverware, pots and pans, or new batteries. In addition to participating in the Call2Recycle program, Snohomish County has recycled 281,435 pounds of lead acid car batteries during that same time period.
“In 2016, the county recycled 1.7 million pounds of hazardous material,” said Matt Zybas, Snohomish County Solid Waste Division Director. “These materials were able to be beneficially reused and recycled and kept out of landfills. The Solid Waste Division works to reduce the overall waste collected in Snohomish County by promoting programs like Call2Recycle’s Battery Recycling Program.”
Snohomish County residents can dispose of household hazardous wastes (HHW) such as batteries, antifreeze, oil, and pesticides for free at the Snohomish County’s Hazardous Waste Drop-off Station in Everett.
