SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. – The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office selected a Tesla Model 3 as the first all-electric patrol vehicle to add to its fleet. The Sheriff’s Office began searching earlier this year for one vehicle to purchase as a pilot project. The Tesla Model 3 will serve as a fully functioning police patrol vehicle with the ability to respond to emergency calls, carry equipment, transport arrestees, make traffic stops, and perform daily police work.
During the selection process, the Sheriff’s Office reviewed all-electric vehicles manufactured by Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Chevrolet, Tesla, Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo. Throughout the search there were many obstacles, including finding an electric vehicle with adequate power supply, efficient heating, prisoner transportation capabilities, passenger cabin space and storage.
After several months of extensive research, the Sheriff’s Office selected the all-electric Tesla Model 3 as a pilot project vehicle. The vehicle was the most suitable in meeting the needs for patrol and was more affordable in comparison to other all-electric vehicles.
During the pilot project, the average fuel mileage, repair and maintenance costs, as well as the vehicle’s performance and abilities will be tracked and evaluated over time. The Tesla Model 3 is expected to be on patrol in Snohomish County by the end of 2021.
