Snohomish County, Wash. – The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Unit, in collaboration with the United States Forest Service, will close the gate on Mt. Pilchuck Rd just past the Heather Lake Trailhead tonight for the winter season. The Mt. Pilchuck Trailhead will only be accessible by foot until the road is re-opened in the spring.

As always, anyone going out to explore Snohomish County’s backcountry in the winter should keep these safety tips in mind:

  • Check weather and avalanche conditions – the National Weather Service (https://www.weather.gov/) and Northwest Avalanche Center (https://www.nwac.us/) are two great resources
  • Take the 10 essentials, plus a little extra warm clothing
  • Check sunset times – it can get darker earlier than expected in the mountains
  • Plan your trip and share your plan with a family member or friend, including what time someone should call 911 should you not return.
  • Dress like an onion (aka lots of layers)
  • Don’t hesitate to turn around if weather suddenly changes or the conditions look dangerous
  • Check road conditions and be prepared for snowy or icy mountain roads
