Index, Wash. – Snohomish County Search and Rescue located a lost hiker near Blanca Lake in the Index area earlier today.

The missing person, an 18 year old woman, had been hiking with two friends.  During the hike, they entered a snow field area.  The woman decided to turn around rather than enter the snow area, and on the way back to the trailhead alone got off trail and became lost.

During search activities today, an Everett Mountain Rescue member located a footprint consistent in size with the missing hiker.  Teams from Everett Mountain Rescue and Seattle Mountain Rescue entered an area described as a very steep drainage following the footprint.  The woman was located safe and walked out with rescue personnel.

The trio did not appear to have been equipped for the backcountry or snow conditions.  Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Sergeant Danny Wikstrom said “It’s important that people stay together and have a plan when hiking.”  He also reiterated that everyone hiking should carry the 10 Essentials.  “I’m convinced if people have the 10 Essentials and don’t have a catastrophic accident we will find them and they will survive…”

The woman was rejoined with family at the trailhead and after being checked by Search and Rescue medics left for home.
