License a Pet

Pet licenses are good for you, your pet, and your community!

  • A pet license is your pet’s free ride home if they become lost. Animal Services staff will attempt to deliver a lost pet home to you immediately, skipping an expensive trip to the animal shelter.
  • Found pets can be quickly reunited with their owner because any finder can look up the tag number to locate the owner's contact information, 24/7.
  • License fees help Animal Services continue our work to save abused and neglected pets.
  • A pet license is inexpensive and much cheaper than the $100 fine for failing to license a pet.
  • It’s the law: All adult cats and dogs in unincorporated Snohomish County must be licensed annually.
  1. Apply for a new pet license
  2. Renew an existing pet license
  3. Update your account

1. Make sure you live in unincorporated Snohomish County

Our jurisdiction covers the parts of Snohomish County that are outside city and town limits. If you live within city limits, you must license your pet with your municipal animal services agency

Check your address in our map tool to see if you live in our service area.

2. Gather proof of a microchip or spay/neuter

Pets who are spayed/neutered are eligible for a discount, with an additional discount for pets who are also microchipped.

  • Proof of microchip includes: a letter or email from your vet, a microchip certificate, or vet bill or adoption paperwork with your pet’s name and microchip number.
  • Proof of spay/neuter includes: a letter or email from your vet, adoption paperwork stating your pet was spayed or neutered, or other vet documentation indicating your pet has been altered.
