SNOHOMISH COUNTY | ANCESTRAL AND HERITAGE HOMELANDS OF COAST SALISH PEOPLES

On behalf of the Snohomish County Council and Snohomish County Government, we honor the ancestors of the Coast Salish and Snohomish people, and all of the tribes and bands who have inhabited this land since time immemorial. We stand with these tribes, which by signing the Treaty of Point Elliot in Mukilteo in 1855, enabled our county, cities and other communities to exist here. We honor these Tribes as they retain their rights to usual and accustomed fishing, hunting and gathering places, and their sovereignty as Indian Nations.

With this tribal acknowledgement, we open our time together by honoring the ancestors whose feet first knew these lands, and whose paddles still know the waters of what we now call Snohomish County.

The County urges all visitors to understand the origins of these lands and Tribal Treaty Rights that exist today on them.  Learn more about this area by visiting the Hibulb Cultural Center and the Sauk-Suiattle Museum & Cultural Center.
